Del irlandés antiguo fér (gaélico escocés feur, irlandés féar),1 del protocéltico *wegro- (galés gwair),2 del protoindoeuropeo *weǵ- ("fortalecer").3 Compárese el latín vegere ("avivar"), vigor o el inglés wake ("despertar").
