Del protoitálico *mātēr, y este del protoindoeuropeo *méh₂tr-1 (o bien *méh₂ter). Compárese el sánscrito मातृ (mātṛ), el griego antiguo μήτηρ (mḗtēr), el eslavo eclesiástico antiguo mati, el alemán antiguo muoter, el irlandés antiguo máthir y el tocario B mācer.1
