Doormen and porteros

Hi, Jerome.

I've noticed some of your latest contributions seem to follow the style and structure of the English Wiktionary. The conventions here are quite different; you might want to have a look at guardameta, for example, to get an idea of them.

In other cases, such as portero, I get the feeling that you are translating the English porter as if both words were equivalent, which isn't the case. A bouncer is never a plain "portero"; one might say "portero de discoteca" if it came to that, but they are called "personal de seguridad" in a formal register, and "gorilas", "cadeneros", "patovicas" or "guaruras" (depending on the country) in colloquial speech. Similarly, reception personnel at a hotel are invariably "recepcionistas".

I'm very glad that you decided to contribute to the project, but please double check your intuitions with a good dictionary or two, especially when working in a foreign language.

Nope, i don't check with a dictionary, lest i be copying it. We don't want the dictionary industry to crack down on Wiktionary, do we ?

I work mostly on the French and the English wikis, especially on translations between the two. In that process, i often run into deficiencies of the Spanish wiki, which seems to be quite behind, which bugs me. So i came in and gave it a nudge ; 'looks like it worked this time, unlike the previous.

I frankly do not know what the policy is on other wikis, but here we strongly insist on having published evidence for every definition, and this includes checking with other dictionaries. Copying from copyright-protected sources is of course out of the question, but there is a huge difference between verification and plagiarism.

By the way, please answer messages on the other user's talk page. I suppose you'd be familiar with the workings of the new message notification system.

Regarding Schopenhauer, I might have a look at the Greek later. I have a copy of Die Welt... at home, so there should be no concerns about the source text. Λεξικόφιλος 07:43 1 jul 2010 (UTC)

Indeed, "published evidence" is a must for Wikipedia, but i confess that i haven't checked regarding the Wiktionaries. I'll have to look into that very soon.

I am against those scattered conversations, and thankfully i'm not the only one. So i reply here. I have not heard about a "new message notification system". Thanks though for taking the opportunity to reply on the other conversation about Schopenhauer. --Jerome Charles Potts 17:12 1 jul 2010 (UTC)

If you continue to reply here, I am afraid the conversation will die a natural death. I check my own talk page for comments whenever I'm notified of updates, but I don't keep tabs on other folks'.
