Del irlandés antiguo ferr (gaélico escocés fheàrr, manés share), del protoindoeuropeo *wers- ('cima'). Compárese el galés gorau ('mejor'), el latín verruca ('promontorio; verruga') o el lituano virš ('sobre').[1][2]
