Del irlandés antiguo ferr (gaélico escocés fheàrr, manés share), del protoindoeuropeo *wers- ("cima"). Compárese el galés gorau ("mejor"), el latín verruca ("promontorio; verruga") o el lituano virš ("sobre").12
