Etimología[editar]

Del protoitálico *steipo-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *steip-o- ("tieso", "erecto").1 Compárese el lituano stìpti ("atiesar"), el inglés antiguo stīf ("impedir", "blocar") y el nórdico antiguo stífla ("impedir", "blocar").1
