Del protoitálico *udero-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *(H)ud-ér-o- ("externo"). Compárese el sánscrito udára ("vientre", "útero"), el griego antiguo ὅδερος (hóderos) ("vientre", "útero") y el prusiano antiguo weders ("estómago", "vientre").1
