Del protoitálico *wes-ti- ("ropa"), y este del protoindoeuropeo *ues-ti-, de *ues-.1 Compárese el hitita u̯ešš/u̯ašše/u̯ašša ("vestir"), el sánscrito वस्ते (váste, "vestir"), el griego antiguo ἕννυμι (hénnymi, "vestir"), el albanés vesh ("vestir"), el gótico 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍅𐌰𐍃𐌾𐌰𐌽 (andwasjan, "desvestir"), el inglés antiguo werian ("vestir") y el tocario B wäs- ("vestir").1
