Etimología[editar]
Del protoitálico *med-ē-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *med- ("medir").1 Compárese el irlandés antiguo midithir ("medir", "juzgar"), el griego antiguo μέδω (médō, "gobernar") y μέδομαι (médomai, "cuidar a", "pensar (en)"), el gótico 𐌼𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (mitan) y 𐌼𐌹𐍄𐍉𐌽 (miton, "medir", "considerar") y el inglés antiguo metan ("medir").1
