Del gaélico clásico scáthán (gaélico escocés sgàthan, manés scaaney), del gaélico clásico scáth,12 del protoindoeuropeo *skat-.34 Compárese el inglés shade, el gótico 𐍃𐌺𐌰𐌳𐌿𐍃 (skadus) o el griego antiguo σκότος (skótos, "oscuridad; tinieblas").
