Etimología[editar]
Del protoitálico *aiþ-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *h₂(e)idʰ- ("arder").1 Compárese el irlandés antiguo áed ("fuego"), el sánscrito इध् (idh, "encender"), el griego antiguo αἴθω (aítʰō, "quemar"), el inglés antiguo ād ("pira") y el alemán antiguo eit ("pira").1
