Del protoitálico *sterkos-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *sterḱ-o- ("contaminación", "ensuciamiento", "excremento"). Compárese el hitita ištar(k)- ("estar enfermo", "atormentar"), el bretón stroñk ("excremento") y el lituano teršti ("ensuciar").1
