Del gaélico clásico aithn- (gaélico escocés aithnich, manés enney ("identificación")), del irlandés antiguo adgnin,12 del protoindoeuropeo *ǵneh₃-. Compárese el latín gnosco, el inglés antiguo cunnan o el ruso знать (znat', "conocer").34
