Del protoitálico *etero-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *h₁e-tero- ("el otro (de dos)").1 Compárese el avéstico atāra ("éste (de dos)"), el albanés jetër/tjetër ("otro") y el eslavo eclesiástico antiguo eterъ/jeterъ ("alguien").1 → iterum
