[editar]Del gaélico clásico scáthán (gaélico escocés sgàthan, manés scaaney), del gaélico clásico scáth,[1][2] del protoindoeuropeo *skat-.[3][4] Compárese el inglés shade, el gótico 𐍃𐌺𐌰𐌳𐌿𐍃 (skadus) o el griego antiguo σκότος (skótos, 'oscuridad; tinieblas').
