Del alemán medio kelich, del alemán antiguo kelih, a su vez del protogermánico *kalik, del latín calix, y este del griego antiguo κάλυξ, "cáliz floral", quizá con influencia del griego antiguo κύλιξ, en última instancia del protoindoeuropeo *kal-, "cubrir".^[1] Compárese el inglés chalice, el neerlandés kelk o el español cáliz.
