Del irlandés antiguo ingen (gaélico escocés nigheann, manés inneen), del irlandés primitivo ᚔᚅᚔᚌᚓᚐ, considerado derivado del céltico común . {{ejemplo|eni-genā, aunque también se postula un préstamo del latín indigena.12
