Del irlandés antiguo cét (gaélico escocés ceud, manés keead),12 del protoindoeuropeo ḱm̥tóm.3 Compárese el galés cant, el bretón kant, el latín centum, el gótico 𐌷𐌿𐌽𐌳 (hund), el ruso сто (sto) o el sánscrito शतम् (śatam).
