[editar]Del protoitálico *ekwo-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *h₁éḱus,1 o bien *h₁éḱwos.2 Compárese el griego antiguo ἵππος (hippos), el irlandés antiguo ech, el inglés antiguo eoh o el sánscrito अश्व (áśva).23
