Atestiguado por primera vez en el siglo XVI. Préstamo del francés medio reconoistre, del francés antiguo reconoistre, del latín recognoscere. Desplazó al cognado nativo acknow ("reconocer, percibir como"), compare los cognados erkennen y erkänna.
