Del inglés medio flor, flore, del inglés antiguo flōr, del protogermánico occidental *flōr, del protogermánico *flṓraz, a su vez del protoindoeuropeo *pleh₂ros, de *pleh₂- ('llano'). Compárese el alemán Flur o el sueco flor.
