Del protoitálico *gʷland(i)- < *gʷlānd-, y este del protoindoeuropeo *gʷlh₂-n-d⁽ʰ⁾-(i)- ("lande").1 Compárese el sánscrito gula ("glande", "pene", "clítoris"), el griego antiguo βάλανος (bálanos, "lande"), el armenio antiguo կաղին (kałin, "lande"), el albanés lênd ("lande") y el prusiano antiguo gile ("lande", "roble").1
