Del inglés medio knowen, del inglés antiguo cnāwan, del protogermánico occidental *knāan, del protogermánico *knēaną, del protoindoeuropeo *ǵneh₃-. Cognado del latín gloria y notio y, por tanto, del español gloria y noción.
