Etimología
[editar]Del inglés medio speken, y este del antiguo specan, síncopa de sprecan, del protogermánico *sprekaną, del protoindoeuropeo *(s)preg-. Compárese el frisón sprekke, el neerlandés spreken, el afrikaans spreek, el alemán sprechen o el sueco språka, este último tomado del bajo sajón; no hay registro de cognados nativos en gótico o nórdico antiguo.
