Del protoitálico *ōd- ("odiar"), *odio- ("odio"), y estos del protoindoeuropeo *h₃e-h₃(o)d- ("odiar"), *h₃ed-io- ("odio")/*h₃od-io- ("odio").1 Compárese el griego antiguo ὀδύσσαοθαι (odýssaotʰai, [aoristo] "estar enfadado"), el armenio antiguo ատեամ (ateam, "odiar"), el nórdico antiguo etja y el inglés antiguo atol ("el mal");1 tal vez también el hitita 𒉺𒊌𒍣 (hat-uk-zi, "es terrible").2
