Etimología[editar]
Del protoitálico *plow-e/o- ("llover"), y este del protoindoeuropeo *plew- ("nadar", "flotar").1 Compárese el irlandés antiguo luithir, foluathar ("volar", "mover"), el sánscrito प्लु (plu, "nadar", "flotar"), el griego antiguo πλέω (pléō, "navegar", "nadar"), πλύνω (plýnō, "lavar"), el lituano pláuti ("lavar"), el eslavo eclesiástico antiguo pluti ("fluir", "navegar") y el alemán antiguo flouwen ("lavar").1
